Fall 2026 Community Classroom Lessons

The Fall 2026 lessons are grounded primarily in my scholarship, including my doctoral research, and draw on the work of other scholars. I also use social media posts, videos, and public commentary as curriculum materials because knowledge is developed and shared in communities as well as universities. These materials bring lived experiences and public debates into our learning, allowing us to consider how scholarship helps us understand everyday situations and how people’s experiences can inform or challenge scholarly interpretations. Together, we’ll practice interpreting claims, considering different perspectives, and deciding how to respond and participate in conversations that affect our lives and communities.

The Fall 2026 lessons bring together racial literacies and other literacies relevant to each subject, including civic, critical, digital, and media literacies. Recurring themes include identity, power, choices, and consequences. Across several lessons, we’ll also consider double binds: situations in which the available choices can carry competing demands or consequences, particularly for Black people. We’ll revisit some case studies from different angles, bringing additional scholarship and perspectives to the same situation and building on what we learned in earlier lessons.

These lessons welcome participants of all racial and cultural backgrounds. You do not need to be Black or have prior knowledge of the subjects to participate, learn, and contribute.
